The Nuestro South Loud & Proud series focuses on the Poder y Cultura that Nuestra Gente in the South can possess. From the comida que cocinamos, the music we play, and our labor which plants, cleans, and builds– Nuestra Gente has grown deep roots in the south.

The core of Nuestro South Loud & Proud is that it is built directly on existing relationships. The initial season of the podcast allowed us to dive into the work of Dr. Julie Weise in Corazon de Dixie but that same research had also already influenced many other scholars who were paving their own paths within this research landscape. As part of the mission to broaden access and impact of the existing scholarship, we decided to use our platform to uplift and magnify these new Latina & Latino researchers and community leaders.

Loud & Proud allowed us to experiment with more long form conversations and for the first time also incorporate videos into our content by recording the discussions. We also got an opportunity to trial run a simpler production flow that required less intensive editing. This was also the first season that Nuestro South began uploading to Youtube in addition to the existing audio only podcast versions. Additionally, we were able to bring on a part time marketing & social media consultant that helped build our promotion strategy and branding.

The greatest impact of Loud & Proud builds on those relationships. Upon completing the 7 episodes with scholars in the US south, our team built a robust relationship and trust with that cohort of scholars that set the foundation for us to push for greater funding to build a team of storytellers around individual scholars. This was the first instance that we realized that scholarship was being produced by the same folks who had experienced for themselves what it meant to grow up and find community as a young Latina/o in the South.
